SOUTH MIDDLE SCHOOL BAND UPDATE - Monday, August 24, 2020
Hi everyone. I hope this message finds you all doing well.
I have a brief update for you all as we prepare for this unique school year. FOR ANY MHS FRESHMEN, PLEASE READ THIS! 1. First of all, any MHS Freshmen (last year’s 8th graders) who still have a South Band school owned instrument or for ANY Jazz Band members who still have their music folders, now that teachers are back in school everyday, we would ask for you to please stop by and drop them off at South. Best times are NEXT WEEK – MONDAY THRU WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 31 – SEPTEMBER 2 from 7:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and 12 noon to 2:45 p.m. 2. MHS FRESHMEN (again, these are last year’s 8th graders) – You are invited to stop by during these same times next week as well to pick up your 8th Grade Band Awards and Full-Band picture from last school year. CURRENT 8TH GRADERS (last year’s 7th graders) and CURRENT 7TH GRADERS (last year’s 6th graders) – we will distribute your awards from last school year when we see you here at school this year. 3. So here’s what I can tell you right now about our plans for the school year. Let’s discuss the return to school options… First of all, please understand that the ONLY Mon County School Instruction option that will contain regular contact with the band will be the Hybrid, where you are in person in school every other day and at home doing extension work on the off days. This is the only option where you see your regular South Teachers on a regular basis. The Home School, WVDE Virtual and even Mon County Virtual options do not include your normal teachers and will not include band. Only the Hybrid Option will have instruction specific to the South Band Program. If circumstances change and Mon County or the entire State goes to 100% virtual again like last Spring, then we would be having those virtual classes with regular teachers. So what will the band program look like with the Hybrid Option? At this time, we are NOT permitted to play our instruments inside the school building, so the plan for our in-school days will be to introduce the music and work on activities that don’t require playing instruments. To begin with, KEEP YOUR INSTRUMENTS AT HOME. Then, you will have the music and assignments to practice and work on at home in the evenings and on the “virtual” day that you are not in school. We will also be utilizing a computer/online program called “Smart Music” this year that will allow us to use technology to bridge the gap between the in school classes and the home days. YOU WILL NEED TO BRING YOUR CHROMEBOOK TO BAND CLASS THIS FALL! It is possible that if we get to a point that the weather looks good and we can work out the logistics with other classes (Phys Ed, Choir, Etc.) that we might try to play together in groups OUTSIDE of the school building from time to time this Fall. Spacing and social distance issues will need to be addressed as well. More details to come. 4. In Closing…. I wish I could give you a better idea of the specifics of this year, but as you know, things have been changing often, and that is expected to continue. Whatever this year brings, we will do our best to provide the best “band” experience that we can. Hopefully things will become more “normal” as the school year progresses. I hope to be able to perform with you all in some way at some point, but we will continue to adapt and make the best out of whatever situations we get. PLEASE sign-up for REMIND if you have not, and please stay connected on Schoology once school gets started – That’s where the assignments will be found. IMPORTANT! If you choose one of the school options that does not include our band activities, I hope you will still stay connected with us via REMIND and keep playing. We will most definitely put everyone back together once this COVID-19 crisis passes. Please hang in there, and stay in touch. More details will be forthcoming as they are available. This is completely a work in progress. Take care and I hope to see you very soon!
